An independent liberal arts university founded in 1907, owned and operated by the university's board of trustees.
The University of Redlands was founded in 1907 on a campus in Redlands' foothills. The first term began that fall with nine faculty members, ten courses, and fifty-nine students. The administration building, completed on Inspiration Hill, became the landmark center of a growing campus that was designed around a quadrangle in the classical university tradition. From its beginning, the university was built on the principle of personalized education: small classes, direct relationships between faculty and students, and curricula designed for individual intellectual growth.
Today the University of Redlands operates as an independent institution governed by a board of trustees. The campus has expanded to include residence halls, academic buildings, science and performing-arts facilities, and a historic chapel that anchors the Quad. Students visit the university for tours, attend events, study in the libraries and labs, and live on campus. The university is also deeply embedded in the city itself: faculty are members of the community, students volunteer in local organizations, and the institution hosts public lectures, performances, and cultural programs that draw Redlands residents as well as visitors from across the region.
